The second practice explored interconnection and brought the group together in shared practice. We began by setting the tone of interconnection by sharing a poem. Each participant read two lines around the room. Next we stood with a fresh piece of clay from our setting. This practice utilized chanting as a group practice. The practice began with five breaths, five hums, and five practices of vowels sounds. Then participants were invited to vowels, hums, and ending with five collective breaths.

A Simple Poem

Across the tumultuous, debris strewn river

Just on the other side of the hill

Where the crowded forest gives way

To the soft dawn

And the rising, rising light

There!

Can you hear it?

A soft, pulsing hum-

Calming, at first, then giving way

To an unending strength

As voice upon voice

And breath upon breath

Join

Here!

The ancient chant, the song of all languages, of all lands,

Beyond words, this chant,

Vowels, they're called but who can resist the call

Of simple, collective voice

Leaning into fierce hope,

Giving way to unexpected joy,

Inherently free to

Be!

Yes, be

The people who dare

To lift our eyes up, up,

To lift our eyes unto the hills

And sing

Yes

Sing!

As we breathe deeply from the earth's core

And breathe out to the distant stars.

May 3, 2017, by Norma Ryuko Kaweloku Wong Roshi for the beloved of Suzanne Thomson, that we may all breathe into our collective freedom.
